How much does it cost to hire an architect?
This is where relativism comes into play. What is relativism? It depends... and so it is with architect's commissions. There is no government agency yet that determines what an architect can charge so it is whatever the market will bear. You can however discuss how much you want the architect involved in your project which can lower the cost. An architect can let you know how much his hourly rates are and therefore determine a not to exceed cost based on how much involvement you want from him. Another method of determining the fee is using a percentage of the cost of construction, time and material, and fees plus costs. What is important is for you to establish a budget and work with an architect you trust to accomplish your project within those limits. It is also most important to establish a complete and thorough contract. A good motto to embrace is “If you don't see it in writing, You aren't getting it.”
Who can call themselves an architect?
In order to use the term “Architect” an individual must have spent at least eight years of combined education and apprenticeship. An architectural degree is a five year effort and our profession is one of the few that require work under the guidance of a professional. Once you complete the eight years you are than able to sit for the exam. The exam is a four day process of twelve separate sections with the last being a twelve hour exam. The pass rate is around 30%. That means 70% that sit for the exam don't make it! If you think that is bad, remember that a baseball player is considered good if he hits the ball 30% of the time. Once you pass the exam you then get to sit for an oral exam and convince several architects you are ready to be licensed. Once you've completed all the steps the state will issue you a license. We must participate in continuing education and renew our license every other year. All this effort insures that a licensed architect is ready and able to help you.
